Allow Short Blog Posts From Time to Time

by Julie McElroy on March 2, 2010

In life, we all have expectations, goals, and hopes.  Some of us are more perfectionists than others.  What a perfectionist wants is for everything to be perfect. Makes perfect sense, right?

As bloggers (and those that are perfectionists), we feel each post has to be inspiring or earth-shattering. We agonize over each word and question it's meaning. Will this be read? Will someone turn their life around based on this post I wrote? Did I say everything I needed to say on this subject? What is the word count?

Speaking of goals...

Goal Number Nine: Allow short blog posts.

This is hard for many bloggers.  As part of my goals for 2010, I threw this one in there.  ALLOW is the key word.  As perfectionists, we are usually our biggest critics. I am giving myself permission to write short blog posts from time to time. You should do the same.

Some Tips on Short Blog Posts
  • Have a main point.
  • Get to the point.
  • Create lists or bullets.
  • Keep it interesting.
Reasons to Write a Short Blog Post
  • Less daunting.  Clearly sitting down and knocking out a 15 minute post is less scary than wondering how you will keep your readers interested in your dissertation.
  • Less time consuming.  As mentioned above, a short post can be knocked out in 15 minutes, which in our busy lives, there may be days that is all the time we have to write a post.
  • Readers have short attention spans! Are you still there??
  • Keeps you motivated. Knowing that is IS OKAY to write a short post makes you motivated to jump on the computer and knock it out.
  • Keeps readers coming back. ANY post is better than none. Still out there??
  • Less editing/proofreading. Obviously, 250 words is easier to edit/proofread than 1500 words.

Bottom line: If you got something to say, just say it.  In 300 words or less.
