Writing in Blog on a Regular Basis

by Julie McElroy on January 7, 2010

New Year. New Decade. New Goals. My last post listed ten writing goals for 2010. Not only a new year, but it is a new decade. So, this could be... New writing goals for the decade. Nah, that would be unrealistic and then "writing a book" would have to be on that list. To really ingrain these goals and to help with follow-through, I will address each of these goals in subsequent posts.

Goal Number One:
Write Twice Weekly in My Blog

The first goal for 2010 is one every blogger may readdress each new year - write in blog on a more consistent basis. My SMART goal is to "write twice weekly in my blog." How will I achieve this goal? Well, the obvious answer is to, well, write 2 posts a week, right? This is not always as easy as it sounds. At first, I will be ready to go, motivated and focused. However, this can get challenging as the year goes on and Life Happens and ideas run out.

Question again is: How will I achieve this goal? I have decided that this goal is a great first goal because many of the other goals listed will help me accomplish this task. Some of my other goals such as keeping a journal, or looking at other blogs, or reading more will all help me stay on target to reach this goal.

The hardest part about staying consistent with blog writing is coming up with ideas to write about. If you have no material or ideas, two posts a week may be a lofty goal. But, if ideas are overflowing, it can help keep you on track and accomplish this goal. Here's to Overflowing Ideas!

So, let's see if I can keep this goal throughout 2010. I will take topic suggestions as well. :)

I applaud your bravery! The best I ever seem to do with regards to regular posting is once a week.

The minute I set any sort of rule to my writing (time spent, pages written per day, etc.), I seem to sink into a black pit of brain fog! I start staring at the clock, counting words, spinning in my chair. Truly, I turn into an anxiety-ridden child!

Goals do, however, work for many people. Defining them is a great start! I hope you have a tremendously successful year and you reach all your goals!

Thanks for the comments. I think if I create a goal that is reasonable, I can achieve it. It keeps me motivated! I try not to create "rules" that are too demanding, but I understand the anxiety goals can cause some people. I guess I always have in my mind that while the writing is quite enjoyable for me, I'd also like readers like yourselves to keep coming back to a fresh post! ;)

I agree that posting twice a week is difficult. I have friends that post every day, but my realistic goal is once per week and my lofty goal is twice per week (which I hit every now and then.)
