My Ten Writing Goals for 2010

by Julie McElroy on January 4, 2010

In spirit of a new year and a fresh start, creating a list of goals seems like an appropriate task. One overarching goal for me this year is to get back into writing. Since I have completed my formal education, I will have more time to devote to my writing.

To get back into writing mode, a great first step is to write a list of writing goals to help me stay focused and get back on track. I wrote a post almost a year ago about making sure that you goals are SMART. This means that your goals should be:

Specific
Measurable
Attainable
Relevant
Timebound

This list below covers most of those, although some may not be timebound. That's okay. This is a start and taking the first step is a step in the right direction.

  1. Write twice weekly in my blog.

  2. By February 1st, have my European Vacation book ready to print.
  3. Respond to at least 90% of the comments on my blog. (measurable!)
  4. Read other blogs weekly to find inspiration.
  5. Comment and interact with other bloggers / writers weekly.
  6. By March 1st, start writing travel articles for Suite 101 and have 30 articles by Dec. 1st.
  7. Read more!! Read books or stories that are meaningful and provide inspiration.
  8. JOURNAL! JOURNAL! JOURNAL! Keep a writing journal to jot down thoughts and ideas and write in it at least 4 times a week!
  9. Allow short posts.
  10. Don't worry about being a perfectionist!

This is a good list to start and most of these goals fulfill at least the majority of the SMART rule! I will get into more detail about each of these goals in later posts. For now, happy writing!!
