Well, this week football has started! Fall is just around the corner. Soon, I will switch the mode on my thermostat to heat instead of AC. The sad thing is that summer is pretty much over and it really flew by! I did so much and traveled a lot and even made some new friends. I went to Wash DC, Annapolis, Georgia, Chicago, and Aspen. I did lots of hiking and was able to take in the mountains.
Now, it will soon get cold and then soon after, snow will come. But, one thing I can look forward to in the Fall is football! I think that’s what helps me keep my sanity in the long, cold, dark winters. It helps cure those end-of-summer blues.
The season of gloves and jackets will soon be here. The days of flip-flops and tank tops have ended until the temperature rises again in late spring. We will exchange our swimsuits for sweaters and sandals for boots. Then, with winter, it will be ski season which I have already bought a four pack to Copper mountain. Soon, Pikes Peak, which I have climbed for the 2nd time this past summer, will be covered with snow and the days will end at 6 pm as the sun sets out of the sky.
Children have started school and before we know it, we will be faced with the genesis of the string of holidays. Time goes by so fast as we watch our days tick by. Every year, at this time Chicago Bears fans hope THIS will be the year. We start over from scratch. It is the time in sports world that as a Chicago fan, I hang on to hope for the Cubs (I am from the North side) as that sport winds down and begin a new optimism as football season gears up. For a few short weeks, I float in the “in-between hopes” season.
This is not usually the case. For the Cubs are typically way out of reach for any championship by the end of summer. In late summer, Cubs fans have lost that optimism they feel in the spring, at the beginning of baseball season. But, this year is different. This year, we still can hang on (even if loosely) to the optimism of the end of baseball season and the fresh beginning of football season.
Maybe, just possibly, this could actually be THE YEAR (for both sports)!! That may be unrealistic and some even call it denial. But, this is the time of year, we can still hope, if only for a few moments! So, as I pack up my sunscreen and turn up my heat, I would like to savor these last few moments of eternal optimism and warm weather–until next spring!
